2010 Fabian Nuñez '97 Scholars

On March 25, 2010, the efforts and achievements of the five outstanding students selected to receive the 2010-11 Fabian Nuñez ’97 Scholarship will be recognized at the Pitzer College Annual Chicano/Latino Student Scholarship Benefit which will be held at the Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles.

MARIE-CLAIRE BURT WOLF '12

Marie-Claire Burt Wolf, a political studies major, is proud of her Latina roots. In high school, she began an Amnesty International chapter at her school. Since arriving at Pitzer College, she has been actively involved in grassroots organizing and community outreach. She has volunteered at the Cesar Chavez Institute, worked as a Jumpstart Corps member, served on the Pitzer student senate, taught English as a Second Language at the Pomona Day Labor Center and worked with the Labor Solidarity Network. She has attended two international conferences on poverty and human rights, and plans to pursue a master’s degree and embark on a career in international development and educational reform.
 

PRISCILLA DE LARA '12

Priscilla De Lara, a public policy and sociology major, is a leader and organizer in the Pitzer College community. Priscilla is now president of the Latino Student Union, an active member of the Feminist Coalition, a founding member of Pitzer Women of Color, and a member of the Black Student Union. She says that the support of her family both inspires and gives her the strength to pursue her goals. She hopes to attain a PhD and to become directly involved in non-profit work building coalitions between communities.

 

CHLOE HANS-BARRIENTOS '12

Chloe Hans-Barrientos was drawn to Pitzer by its emphasis on socially responsible and socially engaged community, an environment in which she knew she would thrive. Through Pitzer’s Center for California Cultural and Social Issues, she became involved with Prototypes, working with incarcerated women and women afflicted with drug dependency. Through her class on writing autobiographies, she has taught the art of expression through the use of words that inspire and promote physical and emotional beauty from within.

ROSA A. INDENBAUM '11

Rosa Indenbaum, an international/intercultural studies major, plans to pursue a career as an immigration attorney. After spending the summer in Tucson, Arizona where she worked for Derechos Humanos, a human rights organization that deals with border issues and immigrant struggles, she discovered her passion for immigration rights. After graduating from Pitzer College, she plans on pursuing a law degree.

SCOTT DERRICK PHILLIPS '11

Scott Phillips, an organizational studies major, transferred to Pitzer College after completing two associates degrees with honors. He is a student in the New Resources (NRS) Program and has served as the NRS student representative on student senate. In 2009, he and a group of fellow NRS students organized a trip to Washington, D.C. for the inauguration of President Obama, creating a noted documentary of the event, which was screened on campus. Scott hopes to pursue his MBA at Claremont Graduate University.
