The Fabian Nuñez ’97 Scholarship at Pitzer College

In 2004, Pitzer College established the Chicano/Latino Student Scholarship in honor of The Honorable Fabian Nuñez ’97, former speaker of the California State Assembly. Since its inauguration, 60 Chicano/Latino students have received this distinguished scholarship in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements. The Honorable Fabian Nuñez ’97

The Honorable Fabian Nuñez ’97, Speaker Emeritus of the California State Assembly (2004-2008), served as the state representative to California’s 46th District. Nuñez wrote The Digital Infrastructure and Video Competition Act of 2006 and was named Legislator of the Year by Governing Magazine in 2007. He authored AB 32, landmark climate change legislation that has become a blueprint for other states and the US Congress in addressing environmental challenges. Prior to his tenure in the legislature, Nuñez worked as political director for the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor from 1996-2000 and as the government affairs director for the Los Angeles Unified School District from 2000-2002. He was also an ex officio member of the Board of Regents of the University of California and a member of the Board of Trustees for the California State University system.

Nuñez is currently a partner in the public strategy firm, Mercury Public Affairs. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors for Zenith Insurance Company and the US Soccer Federation. He was also recently named an honorary chairman of the Internet Innovation Alliance Broadband Ambassador Program, leading an educational and advocacy campaign for nationwide broadband access and adoption.
